Balanced effort fuels Spurs to rout

Updated May 2, 2012 11:16 PM ET

SAN ANTONIO (AP)

Tony Parker shooed away the NBA coach of the year. The San Antonio Spurs were ahead 36 points and he didn’t want Gregg Popovich to end his night just yet.

”To stay in shape,” Parker said.

That’s how bad it got for the Utah Jazz. It was the third quarter of a playoff game, and Parker by then was practically treating it as just another workout.

Pummeling the Jazz in a fashion not seen since Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls humiliated them in the 1998 NBA Finals, San Antonio handed Utah its second-worst playoff loss, winning 114-83 on Wednesday night to take 2-0 lead in the first-round series.

Parker scored 18 points, while Popovich – a day after receiving the NBA’s highest coaching honor – could practically put the Spurs on autopilot after a 20-0 run in the second quarter. Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin had admitted to being unusually jittery before losing Game 1, but this time, it was center Al Jefferson summing up how this shiner felt.

”Embarrassing,” he said.

The only bigger embarrassment for the Jazz in the playoffs was that 42-point loss to Jordan’s Bulls in 1998.

Game 3 is Saturday night in Salt Lake City.

It’s the first time the Spurs have led a series 2-0 since opening the 2008 playoffs against Phoenix. San Antonio won that series in five, and unless the Jazz can shake this off, this one will be over just as quick.

If not sooner.

”I can’t explain it. I couldn’t explain it the other night,” Jazz forward Paul Millsap said. ”They came out and just whipped us.”

It was a total collapse by the Jazz in spite of flying back to Salt Lake City after Game 1 and regrouping with two days of practice back home. There they had talked about adjustments and maybe giving Parker ”a hard foul or two” to get him thinking twice about driving, but Parker didn’t seem to have a dent on him before taking the entire fourth quarter off.

Jefferson and Millsap weren’t any more imposing on offense than they were defensively. Jefferson scored 10 points, and Millsap had nine.

Popovich chalked the blowout more to the Jazz having a bad night – they shot 23 percent in the first half – than the Spurs dominating. Parker played 28 minutes and Popovich said the decision on when to take his star out was a struggle between keeping him in condition and not risking injury.

”He wanted to get the whole quarter, but we compromised and got two more minutes,” Popovich said. ”He’s been special for us all year, obviously. We got to keep him ready to go.”

The Spurs held the Jazz scoreless for nearly 7 minutes in the second quarter while rookie Kawhi Leonard and unheralded swingman Danny Green outplayed the Jazz’s stars. The Jazz filed off the court at halftime walking slow, heads down and quiet after being as close as 31-26 minutes earlier.

Jefferson and Josh Howard, who also had 10 points, were Utah’s leading scorers.

It was the most lopsided postseason win for the Spurs since beating the Nuggets by 28 in 2005. San Antonio’s playoff record is a 40-point victory over Denver in 1983.

”You don’t expect to win a playoff game like that,” Green said. ”They’re a very good team, but they didn’t shoot it as well as they liked. They didn’t shoot it as well as they did, and we shot the ball pretty well. Stuff like that happens.”

The Spurs have won 12 in a row, a season high after surrendering two 11-game winning streaks this season by not playing Parker, Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

Duncan finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Leonard scored 17 points, and Green had 13.

At least the Jazz didn’t look the most embarrassed the entire night. Popovich again had to show off his coach of the year trophy before the game, this time for fans while standing between Duncan and Spurs great David Robinson. Popovich obliged for several seconds before scrambling to hand the trophy off to one of his assistants as fast as possible.

Notes: The last Jazz team to rally from an 0-2 deficit and win a playoff series was 2007, when Utah came back to beat Houston in the first round. The Spurs later beat that team on their way to their fourth championship. … Backup Spurs C Tiago Splitter (sprained wrist) was available to play but the rout gave Popovich the luxury of letting the big man continue to heal. Popovich said Splitter should be better by Game 3.

There is the quick update of the day.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Tim Duncan had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Tony Parker scored 14 and the San Antonio Spurs coasted past the Phoenix Suns 105-91 on Saturday night.

The Spurs officially clinched the Southwest Division, but more importantly, stayed neck-and-neck with Oklahoma City for the No. 1 playoff seed in the Western Conference. San Antonio remains a game behind the Thunder with eight games to go.

Sebastian Telfair scored 21 points for Phoenix, which simply wants to make the postseason. Yet the Suns never looked ready to play from the start and slipped 1 1/2 games behind Denver and Houston for the West’s eighth and final playoff spot.

Phoenix trailed by 17 before the first quarter was even halfway finished, and Steve Nash and Grant Hill sat out the entire second half.

Phoenix Suns vs. San Antonio Spurs – game chat

by Paul Coro – Apr. 14, 2012 06:00 PM
The Republic | azcentral.com

C: Marcin Gortat … DeJuan Blair
PF: Channing Frye … Tim Duncan
SF: Jared Dudley … Kawhi Leonard
SG: Shannon Brown … Daniel Green
PG: Steve Nash … Tony Parker

Key Spurs injuries: Kevin Martin (shoulder) is doubtful.
Key Spurs reserves: Manu Ginobili, Tiago Splitter, Stephen Jackson, Matt Bonner, Boris Diaw, Gary Neal.

On to today’s Orange Slices…

* There was nothing about these past 12 days that was kind to the Suns but they have survived it to remain in contention.
The Suns will end a 12-day stretch of eight games in eight different cities tonight. They played the first six of those without Grant Hill. But no scenario has been as difficult as what they have tonight – facing the Spurs on the second night of a back-to-back and the end of a week-long trip.

San Antonio is a game off Oklahoma City’s Western Conference lead but is tied in the loss column. The Spurs are 24-5 at home, have beaten the Suns twice this season already and have won Phoenix’s past five visits to AT&T Center.

The Suns come home to a four-game homestand and five home games in their finals six games after tonight. Should they steal a 3-1 road trip with a win tonight, they would be in very good shape with Denver and Houston about to play each other.

The Suns are in ninth place in the West, trailing Denver and Houston by one game. Dallas has begun to pull away some with a 2 1/2-game lead on Phoenix, which is ahead of Utah by just one-half game. The Suns are in danger of falling to 10th again tonight if Utah wins at Memphis. Denver, Houston and Dallas are idle.

“That was the first step but we’ve got to forget about it and focus on the next game,” Suns center Marcin Gortat said after the Suns’ Friday night in Houston.

* Tim Duncan is almost 36 years old but looks younger than the fading star he appeared to be last season. Duncan has averaged almost 17 points and 10 rebounds per game since the All-Star break, including a 28-point, 12-rebound game in Thursday night’s win against Memphis. San Antonio Express-News writer Jeff McDonald pointed out today that his averages per 36 minutes (19.2 points, 11.5 rebounds) are nearly identical to his 2005-06 season.

Duncan has career averages of 22.2 points and 12.3 rebounds against Phoenix.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it,” Gortat said of facing Duncan. “He’s my future mentor. I love to play against him. I love to learn a lot from him. Each game, I learn something new. To be honest, I’m sick of losing to this team also. We lost three to Dallas and won the fourth one. We lost two to San Antonio and now I wanted to get a win over there. We just can’t lose anymore.”

* Grant Hill likely will continue to come off the bench tonight against San Antonio because it will help Suns coach Alvin Gentry to keep him on Manu Ginobili defensively for most of the night.

“Bring him on,” Hill said.

Hill played 25 minutes on Thursday night, including the final 17:36 of the game without a break.

“It was good to be in some of those situations defensively where guys were trying to drive on me,” Hill said. “To be able to stay in front of them and move side to side was good.

“I’m in shape but I’m not game-ready. Hopefully, I’ll be better (tonight).”

*The Suns starters again made things dicey down the stretch with a lead on Friday night in Houston. The reserves took the lead to 14 and it went to 16 on the first play after Steve Nash’s and Gortat’s return to the game at the quarter’s midpoint. But the Rockets then scored on eight consecutive possessions to pull within five twice.

Houston was helped by an odd foul on Hill getting tangled with Luis Scola that gave Kyle Lowry a three-shot foul. The Rockets had only made two 3-pointers all game but made two more during that stretch to rally before Nash’s charge taken on Courtney Lee ended the run.

“I don’t know if it was as bad as it looked from the outside,” Nash said in reference to the quirky plays during the stretch.

* The Spurs can clinch the Southwest Division title and home-court advantage for the first-round of the playoffs with a win tonight.

* Phoenix Phactoid Pharaoh Vince Kozar’s Phun Phact o’ the Day gets replaced today by a stat from the Express-News’ Mike Monroe: The Spurs’ Big Three have played 24 of the team’s 57 games together this season. When they combine for at least 50 points, the Spurs are 9-0.

Quick Take: Spurs edge Jazz in thriller

SALT LAKE CITY — Karl Malone and Greg Miller were both in EnergySolutions Arena at the same time Monday.

While that served as intriguing subplot considering their recent war of words, they were not the main event nor the most exciting part of this night.

The San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz put on quite the show of their own — on the court, mind you, not on a talk show or on a blog.

Unfortunately for Jazz fans, the wrong Jefferson made the clutch shot down the stretch.

Utah’s defense, concentrating on Tony Parker and Tim Duncan, couldn’t rotate quick enough to catch up to a wide-open Richard Jefferson, whose 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds remaining was the biggest shot of 106-102 San Antonio win.

That winning trey came moments after Jazz center Al Jefferson missed a game-tying jumper on the other end.

Three Spurs scored 20 or more points as they won their 11th straight game and the seventh in a row on a nine-game road trip.

Tony Parker led San Antonio (23-9) with 23 points and 11 assists, while Tim Duncan and Matt Bonner each contributed 20 points.

Jefferson topped Utah with 20 points and 11 rebounds, but the Jazz fell to 15-16.

Halftime Quick Take

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz are trailing by three at halftime to the San Antonio Spurs at EnergySolutions Arena.

Al Jefferson scored 12 points and Devin Harris added 10 points, but the Spurs rallied out of an eight-point deficit to take a 56-53 lead into the locker room.

Tony Parker is the latest point guard to dissect the Jazz’s defense. A night after Kyle Lowry went off for 32 points in Houston’s 101-85 win over Utah, Parker has hit 6 of 10 shots to score 14 points while dishing out six assists.

Matt Bonner has also killed the Jazz from the outside, drilling four 3-pointers en route to scoring 12 points.

DeJuan Blair (11 points) and Tim Duncan (10) have also hit double figures for the Spurs, who have won 10 straight games..

San Antonio is playing without Manu Ginobili, Tiago Splitter and T.J. Ford because of injuries.

The Jazz are also down a man as starting shooting guard Raja Bell was unable to go due to a strained left adductor (groin) incurred in Sunday’s loss.

The biggest buzz in the arena has been the attendance of Hall of Famer Karl Malone. He is seated next to the crazy doctor behind the basket.

It’s uncertain if Malone and Jazz CEO Greg Miller have made amends since they engaged in a war of words a couple of weeks ago. Miller sat in his usal courtside seat next to the scorer’s table, about 40 feet away from The Mailman.

Ginobili leads Spurs past Jazz, 104-89

Manu Ginobili scored 23 points, 14 in the second quarter, to
lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 104-89 victory over the Utah Jazz
on Saturday night.

Ginobili was 9 of 10 from the field, including 5 of 6 from
3-point range.

The win gave Spurs coach Gregg Popovich his 800th career
coaching victory. He is the 14th coach to reach that milestone and
third among active coaches behind George Karl (1038) and Rick
Adelman (945).

DeJuan Blair had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tony Parker added 14
points, and Tim Duncan 12 as San Antonio moved to 3-1.

Duncan continued to struggle to find his form. The 36-year-old
forward followed up his 1-of-8 performance in Houston by going 4 of
13 from the field. He had nine rebounds.

Ginobili injected life to an offense that had gone cold in
Thursday’s 105-85 loss to the Houston Rockets. He began the Spurs’
quick turnaround in the second period, scoring the first 11 points
of the quarter. That propelled San Antonio on a 22-10 run that
ended with Richard Jefferson hitting a 3-pointer with 5:26 left and
gave the Spurs 17-point lead.

The Spurs were 7 of 8 from the 3-point line during the second
period and were 10 and 16 for the game ( 63 percent).

Al Jefferson returned to the starting lineup for Utah, scoring
21 points with 11 rebounds in 35 minutes. Jefferson sat out Utah’s
102-99 win over Philadelphia on Friday night with an inflamed right
ankle.

But Utah shot just 35 percent (18 of 51) from the field and had
only 11 assists.

San Antonio never trailed and built its largest lead at 27
points on Blair’s basket with 9:52 left that made it 89-62.

Josh Howard, who flirted with signing with San Antonio earlier
in the month before committing to the Jazz, had 18 points.

Forward Derrick Favors, who had a career-high 20 points in his
first career start Friday, only had seven points.

Notes: Ginobili and Blair are the only Spurs to score 20 or more
points in a game this season. … Utah is 2-14 since the AT&T
Center opened in 2002-2003 season.

Reserve Marcus Morris scored 20 points, and Chase Budinger and Kyle Lowry each added 10 for Houston.

Duncan’s block of Lowry combined with a pretty bounce pass on a James Anderson layup sparked a 6-0 run to break a 70-70 third-quarter tie.

Duncan and Parker returned to the starting lineup after sitting out Saturday’s preseason opener against the Rockets in Houston.

Parker scored 11 of his 15 points in the first quarter to lead the Spurs to a 14-4 lead before the Rockets made a run to close the quarter down by six.

Tim Duncan scores 19 points to lead Spurs to 97-95…

SAN ANTONIO — Rookie Kawhi Leonard showed Spurs fans exactly what he’s capable of in his San Antonio debut on Wednesday night.

Leonard hit a 20-footer from the left wing with 5.3 seconds remaining to give the Spurs a 97-95 win over the Houston Rockets in the preseason finale for both teams.

Tim Duncan had 19 points and Tony Parker added 15 — and both know a bit about winning — but it was the rookie who sealed it for San Antonio.

“I loved seeing that last shot go down so that nobody would have overtime,” San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich said. “It made two teams really, really happy the game was over.”

Rookie reserve Marcus Morris scored 20 points, with Chase Budinger and Kyle Lowry each adding 10 points for Houston.

Morris scored 15 points in the second quarter to lead the Rockets to a 51-44 lead and shrugged off a poor shooting performance in the last game, where he went 0 for 4 with one point in 23 minutes.

“It’s nice for him to have a good game because he struggled last game,” Houston coach Kevin McHale said. “He’s going to be fine. He just has to learn how to play different positions. I thought, overall, we again did some good stuff but still have a long way to go.”

Both teams played their starters for most of the first and third quarters, with no starter getting over 24 minutes.

Down 95-85 with 3:31 remaining, the Rockets stayed aggressive by attacking the Spurs’ second unit. Jonny Flynn scored four points from the line and Jeremy Lin hitting a reverse layup to go along with Goran Dragic’s basket to cut the Spurs’ lead to two.

Lin’s driving layup capped a 10-0 run to tie the score at 95-all with 34.6 seconds left.

Leonard got a skip pass from Cory Joseph, made a move past Lin and hit the jumper to give the Spurs the win.

“I used to get the ball down in crunch time,” Leonard said. “I hit a game winner at San Diego State. I just took the shot and made it.”

Duncan’s block of Lowry combined with a pretty bounce pass on a James Anderson layup sparked a 6-0 run to break a 70-70 third-quarter tie and San Antonio never trailed after that.
