NBA: Kobe Bryant returns, but San Antonio Spurs…

Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili all scored at least 20 points to help the San Antonio Spurs beat the Los Angeles Lakers 121-97 on Friday night and spoil Kobe Bryant’s return.

Bryant had missed the previous seven games with a bruised left shin, and the Lakers went 5-2 without the NBA’s scoring leader. But with only two games left in the regular season for Los Angeles (40-24), Bryant returned as he aims to get into a rhythm before the playoffs begin.

Bryant wore a black sock over his lower left leg, with what appeared to be a shin guard protecting the injured area. He scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

The Spurs (46-16) stayed atop the Western Conference with their sixth straight victory, while the Lakers missed a chance to clinch home court in the first round of the playoffs.

These teams could meet in the opening round, and judging by their latest meeting, it would be a mismatch. San Antonio has given Los Angeles its two worst losses of the season the worst — Friday night and 112-91 on Tuesday.

Hawks 97, Celtics 92: Joe Johnson scored 30 points, and host Atlanta edged short-handed Boston to take a step toward landing homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Hawks (38-25) are in line to be the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, and the Celtics (37-27) are on track to be No. 5. This, however, looked nothing like a playoff game early.

Both teams shot over 50 percent

and Atlanta took a 58-49 halftime lead while Boston guard Avery Bradley scored 17 of his career-high 28 points.

Boston left Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Mickael Pietrus at home with injuries, and perennial All-Stars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce made the trip to Atlanta but Celtics coach Doc Rivers rested both stars after playing 11 games in 15 days.

Cavaliers 98, Knicks 90: Amare Stoudemire’s return from a back injury didn’t help playoff-bound New York, which was stunned by host Cleveland.

Stoudemire had missed New York’s previous 13 games with a bulging disk. But even with him in the lineup, the Knicks couldn’t handle the Cavs, who snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the fourth time in 19 games.

Stoudemire finished with 15 points and Carmelo Anthony had 12 before sitting out the fourth quarter.

Manny Harris had 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the Cavs.

Magic: Magic center Dwight Howard underwent successful arthroscopic surgery Friday on a herniated disk in his lower back, the The Orlando Sentinel reported.

Howard is done for the season and will miss the summer Olympics, but team doctor Craig Mintzer said the All-Star was doing well and is expected to make a complete recovery in about four months.

San Antonio hands Los Angeles Lakers their worst…

LOS ANGELES — Tony Parker contributed 29 points and 13 assists, Tim Duncan had 19 points and eight rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs handed the Los Angeles Lakers their worst loss of the season, 112-91 Tuesday night.

Manu Ginobili scored 15 points as the Spurs improved their spot atop the Western Conference with their fourth straight victory. They also snapped Los Angeles’ four-game winning streak while dominating a meeting of division leaders — albeit with Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant sitting out his sixth straight game to rest his bruised shin.

Parker made 14 of 20 shots.

Andrew Bynum had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Lakers, whose Pacific Division lead over the Los Angeles Clippers dwindled to a half-game, although the Lakers hold the tiebreaker.

Six days after the Kobe-less Lakers jumped to a 26-point lead during a comfortable victory in San Antonio, the Spurs answered by scoring 18 consecutive points during an impressive second-quarter spree.

“It went just as well for us as it went for them in San Antonio,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “The Lakers had the kind of night we had back home when they destroyed us. So we had a good night, and we still caught a break: I looked hard, but I didn’t see Kobe anywhere.

“I think that helped us a little bit.”

San Antonio (44-16) has a half-game lead over Oklahoma City (44-17) for the No. 1 seed in the West. The Spurs have won 15 of their last 17 games.

Anthony leads

Knicks past Boston

NEW YORK — Carmelo Anthony collected 35 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double, and the New York Knicks made 19 three-pointers in a 118-110 victory over the Boston Celtics.

JR Smith and Steve Novak each added 25 points for the Knicks, who overcame a season-high 43 points from Paul Pierce and moved into sole possession of seventh place in the Eastern Conference while trimming Boston’s Atlantic Division lead to 3 ½ games. The Celtics would have wrapped up their fifth straight Atlantic title with a victory.

New York improved to 14-5 under interim coach Mike Woodson.

Woodson said forward-center Amare Stoudemire could return Friday in Cleveland. Stoudemire hasn’t played since March 24 because of a bulging disk in his back.

‘Wet willy’ angers

Utah’s Hayward

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz swingman Gordon Hayward said he initially felt like ripping Delonte West’s finger off and fighting him after West jabbed it into Hayward’s right ear during the second quarter of Monday’s 123-121 triple-overtime victory over Dallas.

“I wanted to fight right there, but you can’t do that,” Hayward said Tuesday.

“It wouldn’t have been the smart idea. I’d risk getting a technical foul, getting suspended for the season, whatever.”

Ex-Sonic West insisted afterward Hayward had lint in his hair and he wanted to give him a “wet willy.”

West said, “We are two warriors, out here battling. I forgot the NBA is a gentleman’s game.”

Note

Danny Granger scored 24 points, and Roy Hibbert had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Indiana Pacers to their sixth straight victory, 102-97 over Philadelphia. The Pacers won their fifth consecutive road game.
