Kevin Love had 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the host Minnesota Timberwolves to their second win in a row, 106-96 Monday night over the San Antonio Spurs, who lost star guard Manu Ginobili to a broken left hand.

Luke Ridnour had 19 points and nine assists and Wes Johnson broke out of a shooting slump with 14 points and 6-for-6 shooting for the Timberwolves, who snapped an 18-game losing streak with a win over Dallas on Sunday.

Ginobili injured his shooting hand in the second quarter.

The Spurs will get over the loss to Minnesota quickly. The loss of Ginobili could linger for a while. The team’s leading scorer is the emotional and fiery center of this proud, veteran team.

“Manu is pretty important to us, and we lost him,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “We’ll just have to deal with it.”

The two-time All-Star and former Sixth Man of the Year quickly walked to the locker room after he was injured for X-rays, which revealed a broken fifth metacarpal on his shooting hand.

Hawks 100, Heat 92: Joe Johnson scored 21 points, Tracy McGrady hit two big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, and visiting Atlanta ended Miami’s perfect start.

McGrady and Al Horford each scored 16 for the Hawks (4-1), who opened the final period on a 15-3 run to take control. And McGrady made perhaps the two biggest plays of the night in the final minutes, first throwing a lob to Josh Smith for a dunk,

then hitting a 3-pointer that gave the Hawks a 93-84 lead with 2:26 left.

LeBron James scored 28 points, Chris Bosh scored 19 and Dwyane Wade finished with 12 for Miami (5-1).

Mavericks 100, Thunder 87: Dirk Nowitzki scored 10 of his 26 points during the third quarter, sending host Dallas to a victory over Oklahoma City. The Thunder came in 5-0, the last unbeaten team in the NBA after Miami lost earlier Monday.

Despite playing for the fourth time in five days, Dallas finally looked like the reigning champions, especially in the middle two quarters. The Mavericks outscored the Thunder by 13 in that span and played stellar defense, especially while giving up only 18 points in the third quarter.

Celtics 100, Wizards 92: Ray Allen scored 11 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, and host Boston won for the second straight night over winless Washington.

Paul Pierce had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Celtics (3-3), who pulled to .500 after losing their first three games of the season.

Celtics center Jermaine O’Neal was out with a tight left hamstring.

Raptors 90, Knicks 85: Andrea Bargnani and DeMar DeRozan each scored 21 points, and visiting Toronto opened a 17-point advantage at halftime and held on to snap a three-game losing streak.

Carmelo Anthony had 35 points and 11 rebounds as the Knicks played their second straight game without Amare Stoudemire, who has a sprained left ankle.

Jazz: Utah swingman Josh Howard has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for a flagrant foul in a game Saturday against San Antonio.

That’s all for today.

SAN ANTONIO: The San Antonio Spurs, not quite ready to be written off as too old and too slow to claim an NBA crown, routed the Los Angeles Clippers 115-90 on Wednesday.

Manu Ginobili scored 24 points, leading six Spurs players who scored in double figures.

DeJuan Blair added 20 and Richard Jefferson chipped in 19. Tony Parker scored 14 points with nine assists, Tim Duncan scored 10 with eight rebounds and James Anderson added 12 off the bench as the Spurs shot 56.3% from the field.

The Spurs also made all 15 of their free throws, but coach Gregg Popovich said defence was the key to victory.

“Shots went in tonight,” Popovich said. “That’s what happens. Some nights they don’t drop. Tonight the best part of our game was defence.”

And that’s what was lacking for the Clippers, coach Vinny Del Negro said.

“Give San Antonio credit – they were cutting hard, they were moving the basketball, we were very stagnant,” he said. “We weren’t physical. We weren’t contesting shots…

“We played terrible, just from start to finish tonight,” Del Negro said.

“We had a little glimpse in the second quarter, I thought we did some good things. But they jumped on us in the third and we were just chasing them the rest of the game.”

The Clippers have been touted as a potential new power in the Western Conference after the arrival of All-Star point guard Chris Paul to team with Blake Griffin, the explosive talent who earned Rookie of the Year honours last season.

Griffin led the Clippers with 28 points, while Paul scored 10 on 3-of-10 shooting.

The Spurs, long a Western Conference force, won 61 games last season but were surprised in the first round of the playoffs by a young, energetic Memphis team, sparking predictions that the team led by 35-year-old Duncan and featuring 34-year-old Ginobili and 29-year-old Parker had passed their prime.

In their first two games of this lockout-shortened season, however, the Spurs have now beaten both Memphis and the Clippers.

San Antonio led by as many as 12 points before Griffin capped a Clippers surge by soaring for a basket that knotted the score at 52-52 late in the second quarter.

A Ginobili three-pointer saw the Spurs take a 58-54 lead at half-time, and San Antonio took firm control in the third period, when they out-scored Los Angeles by 21 points to take a 96-71 lead.

The comfortable victory meant Popovich was able to give his stars some rest. Duncan played 25 minutes, Parker 26 and Ginobili 27.

“You wouldn’t trade it,” Popovich said of the luxury of resting his veterans for significant minutes.

It could prove especially important in the hectic, lockout-shortened season.

“It was a good night for us, and to get some rest was surely welcome,” Popovich said.

In New Orleans, Jarrett Jack had 21 points and nine assists in his regular-season debut, and New Orleans dominated in their home opener, beating the winless Boston Celtics 97-78.

Danny Granger scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as Indiana Pacers beat the Raptors 90 to 85. Paul George had 18 points, David West scored 14 and Roy Hibbert had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

At Auburn Hills, Michigan, rookie Kyrie Irving had 14 points and seven assists to help Cleveland Cavaliers beat Detroit 105 to 89, spoiling the Pistons’ first home opener with new owner Tom Gores.

Meanwhile Joe Johnson led another balanced attack with 18 points as as Atlanta beat Washington 101 to 83.

At Denver, Nene scored 25 points, reserve Al Harrington had 18 points and seven rebounds, and Denver rolled over the Utah 117 to 100.

At Charlotte, North Carolina, Dwyane Wade hit a bank shot over Gerald Henderson with 2.9 seconds left to lift unbeaten Miami over Charlotte 96 to 95.

In the other games Oklahoma City beat Memphis 98 to 95, Golden State beat New York 92-78, Philadelphia routed Phoenix 103 to 83, Atlanta beat Washington 101 to 83. — Agencies

HOUSTON (AP) — Rockets second-round draft pick Chandler Parsons has signed a two-month contract with the French team Cholet, with an opt-out clause if the NBA lockout ends in October. Mark Bartelstein, Parsons’ agent, said Friday night the former Florida star will leave Sunday and immediately join the team, which has already started its training camp.

The 6-foot-10 Parsons was the 38th overall pick by Houston. He was the Southeastern Conference player of the year for the 2010-11 season after averaging 11.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

The NBA lockout began July 1, and slow progress in negotiations is jeopardizing the scheduled start of training camps in early October.

MIAMI (AP) — Chris Bosh enjoyed just about every second of his jampacked offseason. Nonetheless, he’s ready to go back to work.

Bosh said Saturday that he expects the Miami Heat to reconvene sometime soon, even though the NBA lockout has entered its third month with no apparent ending in sight. This would ordinarily be the time of year where most players start ramping up workouts anyway, and Bosh said he will be ready whether training camps begin on time or not.

“We’re going to make some plans. We’re going to plan to do something,” Bosh said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles. “I think just getting around each other, I think it’s important as far as team-building is concerned and just getting something going. We’re pretty much still in the process of doing that.”

Bosh was making an appearance Saturday with fans to help promote the video game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.” Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics were among the group of other NBA players involved with the event.

Bosh said he used to play “a lot of video games” when he was younger, and said he still dabbles when his schedule allows.

“It’s cool to do cool things,” Bosh said.

But for now, he’s thinking more and more about the upcoming Heat season — and not back at what went wrong when Miami lost in six games to Dallas in last season’s NBA finals.

Bosh was emotionally crushed in the moments after Dallas won the title, though said Saturday said he’s gotten past most of the disappointment that came when seeing the championship slip away.

“There’s no reason to hold on to it,” Bosh said. “The only reason I hold on to it is when I need motivation. But other than that, it happened and there’s really no emotional attachment for me. I let all that out within 24 hours after I was done. It’s nothing I hang on. I talked about everything. I talked about it until I was blue in the face. And then once you do that, you just realize you have to move forward.”

His summer schedule made the task of moving past the finals somewhat easier.

Bosh’s wedding to the former Adrienne Williams was in July, and the pair have done so much traveling since that the All-Star has grown fond of saying they’ve been “M-I-A from MIA” in recent months. He is scheduled to appear on an episode of “Law and Order” later this month, and in the coming days he’ll be in New York for some Fashion Week events, U.S. Open tennis and possibly the Dallas Cowboys’ season-opener on Sept. 11 against the Jets.

Much like teammate LeBron James, Bosh — a Dallas native — is a huge Cowboys fan.

“I’m sure he’ll be there, too,” Bosh said.

Bosh has been working when he can at the University of Miami, as have players from a number of different franchises in recent weeks. Bosh said his training will intensify, as usual, now that summer is winding down.

And although he’s like everyone else in having no idea when the lockout will end, Bosh remains hopeful that a deal can be struck before too long.

“I’m an optimistic person anyway,” Bosh said. “The NBA is as good as it’s ever been right now and I think there’s no reason to miss out on it. So I think everybody will come to a conclusion. When you’re dealing with business, emotions and feelings get involved and that’s natural. You’re going to have arguments. But I think as long as everybody knows that and as long as we keep moving forward to a deal, then that’s progress.”

Ronzone out as asst GM with Timberwolves

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tony Ronzone came to the Minnesota Timberwolves shortly before the 2010 draft and was charged with revamping the organization’s scouting department and helping to improve the team’s lackluster performance in the draft.

Less than two years later, Ronzone has left his position as assistant general manager. Timberwolves spokesman Mike Cristaldi said Friday that Ronzone and the team “mutually agreed” to part ways just 16 months after he was hired away from the Detroit Pistons.

Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn was not available for comment. The Associated Press left a phone message for Ronzone.

Ronzone helped Kahn in two drafts, but his biggest contribution to the team likely was helping to convince Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio to join the Timberwolves next season. Ronzone was essential to the delicate process, and his relationship with the Rubio family was a big part of finally luring Minnesota’s 2009 first-round draft pick to the NBA.

Ronzone was hired shortly after assistant GM Fred Hoiberg left the team to coach Iowa State, and was charged with not only improving the team’s international scouting resume, but also working closely on the NBA personnel side.

He helped work out a trade with the New York Knicks to bring Anthony Randolph to Minnesota and worked tirelessly with Kahn to reshape the Timberwolves into a younger, more athletic group.

Highly respected as an international scout, Ronzone worked with scout Pete Philo to help upgrade a department that previously was a weakness in Minnesota. In two drafts with Ronzone in the room, the Timberwolves selected Serbian forward Nemanja Bjelica and Brazilian big man Paulao Prestes in the second round in 2010.

The Wolves also had a blunder in June when they selected Congo forward Tanguy Ngombo in the second round, only to find out later that he was too old to be eligible for the draft. The Wolves eventually were allowed to retain the rights to the 26-year-old, but his status as a promising prospect is greatly diminished.

The Ngombo selection likely had little to do with the decision to part ways. Philosophical differences between Kahn and Ronzone on the direction of the franchise started to surface around draft time in June and may have contributed to the split.

It remains unclear what the Timberwolves will do, if anything, to replace Ronzone going forward.

Ronzone has been a big part of USA basketball for years, with his deep international roots a big part of the advance scouting that needs to be done for teams competing in the Olympics and world championships. He has served as director of international personnel, work that will continue heading into the London Games in 2012.

Bird, Cash lead Storm past Silver Stars, 70-60

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — With the playoffs set to begin in less than two weeks, the Seattle Storm look ready to defend their championship.

Sue Bird scored 15 points, Swin Cash had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and the Storm beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 70-60 on Saturday night. Lauren Jackson added 13 points as Seattle (19-13) won for the sixth time in seven games and took four of five in the season series against San Antonio.

The Storm lead Phoenix by one game for second place in the Western Conference, and home-court advantage in the firsst round.

“We’re in a situation where there are a couple of games left, we’re trying to get second place and we can really control our own destiny by getting wins,” Bird said. “So we just wanted to do whatever we had to do to get a win, and everybody did that tonight. It felt really, really good.”

Sophia Young scored 22 points and Becky Hammon had 14 for the Silver Stars (15-16), who lead Los Angeles by two games for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West. San Antonio also fell three games behind Phoenix, which beat the Sparks later Saturday.

“I thought (Sue) Bird and (Lauren) Jackson were Bird and Jackson,” Silver Stars coach Hughes said. “They have a very formidable team. They’re back in a rhythm that reminded me of what I saw of them last year.”

After the Silver Stars cut a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to seven, Cash banked in a 3-pointer and Seattle never looked back.

Cash topped 4,000 career points, reaching the mark when Bird found her for a layup with 8:23 left in the third quarter.

The Storm outrebounded San Antonio 40-21 and shot 14 for 26 in the second half.

“The last game we played them, they beat us on the boards,” Cash said, “so we really wanted to make sure we got to the glass defensively and give them only one shot — and offensively to give ourselves second chances.”

Seattle has beaten San Antonio 10 of the last 11 times the teams have met. Jackson didn’t play the lone time the Silver Stars won.

Storm coach Brian Agler had considered holding out Jackson, who missed time earlier this season after having hip surgery, but the coach deferred to the three-time MVP.

“She wanted to play,” Agler. “She knows her body better than anybody. We didn’t play her big minutes or long stretches, but she wanted to play and be a part of it, so we let her do that.”

San Antonio’s standout rookies Danielle Robinson and Danielle Adams both struggled. Robinson was 1 for 10 and Adams 0 of 7.

The Storm committed eight turnovers in the third quarter but hit 7 of 12 shots from the field and outrebounded the Silver Stars 11-3. Seattle took its biggest lead, 47-40, on Katie Smith’s layup with two minutes left. Smith stole the ball, passed it to Tanisha Wright, who found Smith downcourt for the score.

Leading 47-44 after three quarters, Seattle went on a 15-4 run to start the fourth quarter, with Bird leading the way with seven points and an assist during the spurt.

Seattle, up 30-29 at halftime, used an 11-2 second-quarter run to turn a seven-point deficit into a two-point lead. Le’coe Willingham began the run with a jumper and Cash later capped it with five straight points after having gone scoreless up to that point. Cash had seven first-half rebounds, as Seattle held a 21-14 rebounding advantage at halftime.

The Silver Stars led Seattle 16-13 after the first quarter, holding Seattle to 6-of-18 shooting. San Antonio took its biggest lead at 16-11 on Young’s free throw.

Cash missed all five of her shots in the quarter. Bird led all scorers with seven points, hitting 3 of 4 shots. Her only miss came when she forced up a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock.

Dupree helps Mercury clinch playoff spot

PHOENIX (AP) — Candice Dupree had 22 points and a franchise-record 19 rebounds to help the Phoenix Mercury clinch a playoff spot with a 93-77 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night.

Diana Taurasi added 24 points for the Mercury (18-13), who won for the third time in four games and remained a half-game behind second-place Seattle going into the final week of the season.

Candace Parker had a season-high 32 points for Los Angeles (13-18), which has lost three of four. Kristi Toliver had 23 points and DeLisha Milton-Jones added 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Sparks, two games behind fourth-place San Antonio, host the Silver Stars on Tuesday.

Los Angeles, which trailed by eight after the third quarter, pulled to 80-75 with 4:34 remaining. However, Taurasi converted a pair of free throws and then hit a 3-pointer to help secure the win.

Brock, Loeffler to assume ownership of Dream

ATLANTA (AP) — Mary Brock and Kelly Loeffler are taking over ownership of the Atlanta Dream from Kathy Betty.

Betty has been the managing partner since adding Brock and Loeffler to the all-female ownership team in January. Brock and Loeffler must be approved by the league as majority owners. Betty bought the team from Ron Terwilliger in 2009.

The Dream lost to Seattle in the 2010 WNBA finals, but their regular-season average attendance of 6,293 was the third-lowest in the 12-team league and more than an 11 percent dip from 2009. This year’s average of 6,404 again is third-lowest, ahead of only Chicago and Tulsa.

The Dream can clinch an Eastern Conference playoff spot with a win over Tulsa on Sunday.

Uruguay into next round after 79-66 Paraguay win

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina (AP) — Leandro Garcia scored 19 points and Uruguay beat Paraguay 79-66 on Saturday to warp up a spot in the second round of the Olympic basketball qualifying tournament for the Americas.

Paraguay joined Cuba as the first two teams to be eliminated from the competition.

Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Canada, Puerto Rico and Panama also will advance to another stage of round-robin games starting Monday.

In other games Saturday, Brazil beat Cuba 93-83, Venezuela topped Canada 103-98 in overtime, and Argentina downed Panama 90-71.

On Monday, it’s: Dominican Republic-Panama, Venezuela-Puerto Rico, Argentina-Canada, and Brazil-Uruguay.

The two finalists earn places in the 2012 Olympics in London. The United States isn’t competing because it qualified automatically for London by winning the 2010 world championship.

Garcia was 5 of 9 from 3-point range, and Uruguay was 11 of 19 overall.

“It was a very dangerous game,” Garcia said. “We started a bit ordinary, but after the second period we improved and were able to finish off the game.”

Enrique Martinez led Paraguay with 18 points.

Venezuela needed overtime to beat Canada after the teams were locked at 84-84 after regulation time.

Venezuela coach Eric Musselman said he was confident his team would eventually outscore the Canadians the longer the match progressed.

“I told them all, ‘If this game finishes at 60 points, we lose, if it’s around 90, it’ll be close and, if it’s over that figure, we win,’” Musselman said.

Greivis Vasquez scored 29 points for Venezuela.

“What disappointed us is that we had a good game plan and we didn’t follow it, but despite that we had the chance to win,” Canada coach Leo Rautins said.

Meanwhile, Vitor Benite scored 19 points as Brazil inflicted a fourth straight loss on Cuba, which had already been eliminated before the match began.

Cuba’s Yoan Luis Haiti had 27 points.

Argentina finished the first round as the only team to win all its four games after beating Panama.

Houston Rockets player Luis Scola was the standout for the host nation with 19 points and 14 rebounds. He was 5 of 6 from 3-point range

Fellow NBA player Andres Nocioni of the Philadelphia 76ers added 18 points.

“The first half cost us, but in the second we started to circulate the ball more and play more as a team,” Nocioni said.

Bogut might play in Australia during NBA lockout

SYDNEY (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut might join fellow Australian Patty Mills and play in the Australia’s National Basketball League during the NBA lockout.

Bogut has had talks with NBL teams in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide. At issue is a potential half-million dollar injury insurance policy to cover his hefty contract with the Bucks.

Bogut said on Twitter: “I can confirm I am in talks … a long way to go yet though.”

Mills signed last week with the NBL’s Melbourne Tigers to play the season, which begins Oct. 7 and ends in March. Mills has an “NBA out” clause which would enable him to return to the Portland Trail Blazers if the lockout ends.

The NBA locked out its players on July 1 after a collective bargaining agreement expired.

”Horford was inspired,” Brazil coach Ruben Magnano said. ”We couldn’t get hold of the ball and get rebounds, and we also made some pretty childish turnovers.”

    SIAULIAI, Lithuania
– Tony Parker scored 32 points Friday, leading France past Dirk Nowitzki and Germany 76-65 at the European Championship.

The San Antonio Spurs guard asserted himself in the third quarter at the 24-team tournament, which will produce two qualifiers for next year’s London Olympics.

“When Tony has his night, he is impossible to guard,” Germany coach Dirk Bauermann said.

Nowitzki, the MVP of the NBA finals, finished with 20 points, but he played little in the second half.

“We tried some man-to-man, some zone defense, but Tony was too strong and kept getting into the zone,” Nowitzki said.

Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol scored 21 points to power unbeaten and defending champion Spain to an 86-69 victory over Britain.

Toronto Raptors center Andrea Bargnani kept Italy alive by scoring 36 points — more than half his team’s total — in a 71-62 victory over Latvia. Bargnani had the highest-scoring game of the tournament so far. The only other Italian in double digits was Marco Belinelli of the New Orleans Hornets with 11.

Italy is 1-2 in a tough Group B. Latvia, the youngest team in the event, is 0-3. Rihards Kuksiks led Latvia with 19 points.

Parker scored 13 points in a 29-12 third quarter for France, which had runs of 12-1 and 10-0 in that stretch to put the game away.

“They were the better team,” Nowitzki said. “Tony had an unbelievable night shooting the ball, getting to the paint and finishing,” he said. “Offensively I really couldn’t get anything going any more in the second half. They really played us physical.”

Host Lithuania used a 10-1 run to close out a 75-68 win over Turkey and go to 3-0. Turkey, last year’s runner-up at the world championships at home, is 2-1.

Darius Songalia led Lithuania with 12 points, while Simas Jasaitis and Rimantas Kaukenas each had 11. Ersan Ilyasova led Turkey with 20 points.

Spain and Serbia also are 3-0 and close to moving into the second round. The top three teams from each of the four groups advance.

“We’re on the right path, but Lithuania and Turkey have more talent to give us more problems. We need to bring more energy and aggressiveness,” Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said of his team’s next Group A opponents.

Gasol’s brother, Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies, added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Spain. Rudy Fernandez added 11 points for the Spaniards. Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng led Britain with 17 points.

Serbia also won its third straight, using a big fourth quarter to rally past Israel 89-80. Serbia, which lost the final to Spain two years ago, awaits games against France and Germany. Israel dropped to 0-3.

Dusko Savanovic led Serbia with 24 points, including a key 3-pointer late in the game. Nenad Krstic, the former Oklahoma City Thunder and Boston Celtics center, added 18 points and Marko Keselj had 15.

“We didn’t panic even when we were down by 12,” Krstic said.

In Group A, Poland won its first game, beating winless Portugal 81-73 behind 18 points from Lukasz Koszarek.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs are confirming to News 4 WOAI Monday that Manu Ginobili played with a fractured elbow in the playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies.

On April 13th in the final game of the regular season against the Phoenix Suns Ginobli injured his right elbow. The Spurs initially announced that it was a hyperextension, and then later announced that it was a sprain.

Spurs fans still believed that Ginobili was a fighter for playing with a sprained elbow, but what they did not know was just how much Ginobli was fighting.

Ginobli recently told the Argentine website Noticiasmdq.com that he fractured his humerus bone. But the Spurs told News 4 WOAI on Monday that Manu actually franctured his right ulna, which is the bone running from the elbow to the pinky.

Ginobli played 5 of the 6 playoff games against the Grizzlies with a fractured arm, and still lead the team with an average of 20.6 points per game.

“Last Wednesday I had an MRI with the San Antonio medical staff. The swelling has gone down and the small fracture is about 85 percent healed. I have to rest for about three weeks and then begin slowly,” Ginobili Tweeted.

Ginobli chose to downplay his injury, while Boston’s Rajon Rondo was receiving a lot of national media credit for his ability to play through a hyperextended elbow.

We’ll put this right up there with the broken nose, killing the bat and the rest of the stories when we write the book about the legend of Manu Ginobili.

Two teams executed what they wanted to do this season better than any other — the Chicago Bulls on defense, the San Antonio Spurs on offense.

Two teams executed what they wanted to do this season better than any other — the Chicago Bulls on defense, the San Antonio Spurs on offense.

Yet, when the talk of a title came up it was always the Lakers out of the West, Miami and Boston in the East.

“I think we’ve been a pain in the ass for the press this year, we just get in the way of the conversation…” Gregg Popovich said before his team took on the Lakers.

The Spurs have always been fine with that. It’s not about flash, it’s about execution and belief in a system. That execution is half of what the Spurs need to win.

Sticking to the system that is their strength. It’s not the system itself — what the Spurs run is not better or worse than the Lakers triangle, or what is done in Boston, Chicago, or even Memphis and Philadelphia. What is different in San Antonio is the willingness to stick to that system and execute it properly every time down. They as a team commit to the system in a way other teams do not.

Talent matters — they need the Tim Duncans and the Manu Ginobilis and the Tony Parkers — but the Spurs made their leaps forward this season without a massive roster overhaul as some had called for. Timothy Varner of 48 Minutes of Hell explained it this way in an email to PBT.

What the Spurs didn’t do is blow up their team. They didn’t move Richard Jefferson, although they found a creative way of reducing his annual salary. They didn’t decide that trading away one of their Big 3 was their next ticket to contention. They made small, surgical changes that left the rest of the body intact and unharmed.

The beauty of this approach is that the Spurs out-execute most teams because their players, by and large, breathe the Spurs’ system. In San Antonio, this takes time. One full season, at least. Sometimes longer. By limiting their personnel turnover the Spurs set themselves up to… beat you with a bench that is not only talented, but one that clearly understands the nuances of Spurs basketball.

In the playoffs, the pressure is more intense — pressure from opposing defenses is tougher (especially as teams advance), pressure with the weight of the games increases. It becomes suffocating for some.

The Spurs, they just execute it. They know they can they dare you to match.

But the Spurs do not have the overwhelming talent of the Lakers, Celtics and Heat. That means their margin for error is smaller.

Which brings us to the second thing that has to happen for the Spurs — they can’t afford injuries. They need to stay fresh and healthy.

Already Manu Gimobili has a sprained elbow. That is not likely enough to cost them much against Memphis — the Grizzlies big men are their strength — but from the second round on they will need him at or near 100 percent.

“I think we can play with anybody,” Popovich said. “The question for us is if we can stay healthy and last against all these young, athletic deep teams.”

If they can, you know they can execute the Spurs system. Ii they do that they have a chance to beat anybody. And win another title.

That’s all for today.

The Los Angeles Lakers ended their five-game losing streak Tuesday night.

They’ll find out what it cost on Wednesday.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 points, but Bynum hyperextended his right knee in the two-time defending NBA champions’ 102-93 victory over the San Antonio Spurs’ role players.

The Lakers’ hopes for a third straight title might have taken a significant blow when Bynum fell after stepping on DeJuan Blair’s foot during the second quarter.
by Bob Young, The Heat Index – Apr. 12, 2011 08:59 PM
The Arizona Republic

It’s funny how things work out.

Well, if you’re an inhabitant of Planet Orange, maybe it isn’t that funny.

But a year ago at about this time the Suns were in the playoffs, where they would sweep the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals and supposedly exorcise all sorts of playoff demons.

Wednesday night, the Suns play out the string on a season that lost its soul against those same Spurs, and the Suns only can wish there were playoff demons to worry about.

The Spurs?

Oh, they’ve wrapped up the top seed in the Western Conference and might not even need to play their stars Wednesday night unless there are still best-record-in-the-NBA ramifications.

There’s a lesson in patience here.

Those 2009-10 Suns played the Lakers in the conference finals and were within a crazy offensive rebound by a crazy player from taking a 3-2 lead in that series with Game 6 in Phoenix.

Of course, Ron Artest broke their hearts, the Lakers closed them out en route to another championship and Artest auctioned off his ring.

The Spurs, meanwhile, were viewed as a team on the slide.

Tim Duncan was old and on wobbly legs. Manu Ginobili’s bald spot was expanding faster than the hole in the ozone layer. Richard Jefferson wasn’t the fit everybody expected.

Nobody knew it yet, but Tony Parker’s personal life would make headlines.

The Spurs didn’t panic.

In fact, their coach, Gregg Popovich, graciously congratulated the Suns and particularly playmaker Steve Nash.

And he said of his own team, with Duncan then 34, Ginobili 32 and Antonio McDyess 35: “I would go with these guys again.”

And he did, tweaking the roster but keeping the core, opening up the offense and sticking with Jefferson.

The Suns, who have undergone more makeovers than the cast of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” went under the knife two more times.

Of the top eight players in the Suns’ playoff rotation last season, four remain.

All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire’s departure is the most notable, of course. Jason Richardson was a big-time scorer. Leandro Barbosa was capable of having big nights off the bench.

Goran Dragic looked like the team’s future at point guard.

Heck, even Robin Lopez was playing pretty well in the playoffs.

Oh, wait. He’s still down there somewhere at the end of the bench.

Anyway, of the top eight players in the Spurs’ playoff rotation last season all eight remain with the team.

That’s how the Spurs operate. That’s why in the Duncan era they have won at least 50 games every season except in the lockout-shortened 1999 year, when they won 37 of 50 and the NBA championship.

That’s 14 consecutive seasons in the playoffs.

It’s why they have four championships, three after the transition from a good run with the core of Duncan, David Robinson, Avery Johnson and Sean Elliott to one of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili.

Sure, they had the good fortune – or possibly forethought – to have Duncan fall to them.

But the Suns were in a great spot when they plucked Nash from Dallas in free agency, too.

Since then, their core has changed more often than Jessica Simpson’s.

They’re also on their fourth general manager and third coach in the seven seasons since Robert Sarver and his investment group took over.

On the flip side, Popovich was looking for his 798th victory as San Antonio’s coach Tuesday night against the Lakers. He moved past Boston’s Red Auerbach this season for the second-most victories with the same team.

Only Jerry Sloan, who walked away in Utah this season, has more wins with one team than “Pop.”

There’s a lot to be said for sticking with something that works.

ATLANTA (AP)—The San Antonio Spurs, determined to end their recent string of road losses, made a fourth-quarter statement against the Hawks.

Tony Parker(notes) scored 26 points and San Antonio moved closer to home-court advantage in the playoffs by ending a four-game road losing streak with a 97-90 win over Atlanta on Tuesday night.

The Spurs led only 81-79 midway through the final period before taking control with an 11-3 run.

“Finally!” said Parker, who contrasted the Spurs’ strong finish with the team’s problems in closing out games in their recent six-game losing streak.

“If we don’t learn from those, something’s wrong with us,” Parker said.

Manu Ginobili(notes) had 18 points and Tim Duncan(notes) had 17 for the Spurs, who had been 0-6 on the road against Eastern Conference teams which have clinched playoff berths.

The Spurs began the night 2 1/2 games ahead of the Lakers in the race for the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

San Antonio ended the six-game losing streak with Sunday’s home win over Phoenix. The Spurs took a more important step toward home-court advantage through the Western Conference playoffs by taking their first road win in almost three weeks.

“We were a little shaky the last couple weeks,” Ginobili said. “But we are still out there and we are optimistic, but yet I don’t feel that we are playing our best basketball right now.”

Joe Johnson(notes) had 21 points and Jamal Crawford(notes) had 20 for the Hawks.

Atlanta’s Al Horford(notes) said he could see a difference in the Spurs in the final period.

“I think they picked up the tempo a little bit, and it took us out of some things we wanted to run and how we wanted to do it,” Horford said. “They’re just a great defensive team. They have a lot of guards that just keep attacking you in different ways.”

The Hawks were short-handed on their front line. Forward Josh Smith(notes) had swelling in his right knee and was not in uniform. Center Jason Collins(notes) did not return after suffering a sprained left ankle late in the first half.

With Smith out, Horford moved to forward as Collins started at center.

The injuries only added to the Hawks’ difficulties in stopping the drives to the basket by Parker and Ginobili.

“Both guys did a great job of breaking the defense down and getting into the paint,” said Hawks coach Larry Drew of Parker and Ginobili. “We did not do a good job of containing the ball.

“We certainly missed Josh. We missed his energy. We missed his athleticism. Josh has a way of erasing some of our mistakes.”

Zaza Pachulia(notes) took over at center for the start of the second half.

The Hawks led 42-31 in the second quarter before the Spurs closed the half with a 12-4 run to trail 46-43 at the break. Parker had 10 points in the third period as San Antonio pulled ahead.

The Spurs outscored the Hawks 31-25 in the final period.

“We obviously did a better job than we’ve been doing in that regard,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.

“We started out a little flat, but I thought the defense picked up and we got a little more physical and aggressive and that fueled some of our offense.”

San Antonio led 81-79 when Atlanta’s Kirk Hinrich(notes) was called for a flagrant one foul against Ginobili, who made both free throws to start the decisive 11-3 run.

Hinrich had 13 points before fouling out. Horford had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Popovich has 795 wins with San Antonio since 1996, matching Red Auerbach’s total with Boston from 1950-66. The two are tied for second all time for the most wins with one team, behind Jerry Sloan’s 1,127 with the Jazz.

Notes: F Marvin Williams(notes) was given the Jason Collier Memorial Trophy before the game for his community service. The award is named for the late Hawks center who died on Oct. 15, 2005. … The Spurs’ last road win came on March 18 at Dallas. … C Etan Thomas(notes) appeared in only his 10th game as the injuries to Smith and Collins stretched the Hawks’ bench. … The Spurs took a 39-25 advantage in rebounds while outscoring the Hawks 46-36 in the paint.

That’s all the news for today.
