Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News reports: In a surprise move, Richard Jefferson has informed the Spurs that he intends to opt out of the final season of his contract and will become a free agent at midnight eastern time. Jefferson was due to make $15 million next year

Carmelo Anthony (notes) has one more year left on his contract with the Denver Nuggets before he can opt out of it and become an unrestricted free agent. The Nuggets are feeling like he may do just that and the team "is prepared to trade Melo rather than let him walk" next summer, according to a source for the Denver Post.

Danny Ferry left the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this offseason after a five-year run as GM that included a trip to the Finals. He’s now hot on the trail of a new gig. Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Portland Trail Blazers are going to meet with Ferry to discuss the spot once filled with Kevin Pritchard until hours before the draft when he got fired

The Los Angeles Clippers are about to go into the biggest free-agent season ever with no head coach at its helm to help sell the franchise to potential players. Last night, the team was working on changing that with a meeting with former Chicago Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro and team owner Donald Sterling, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J.

Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that LeBron James (notes) should be expecting to hear soon that Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw is the new head coach of the Cavaliers.
